Creating a soothing and comforting interior design for a new oncology unit at a hospital requires a thoughtful approach that integrates elements of colour therapy and clinical considerations, and caters to the unique needs of cancer patients.

To begin, a calming and healing colour palette is essential. Soft, cool colours like pale blues, greens, and gentle corals and pinks were used throughout the space. These hues, as well as the symbolism of the Eucalyptus was chosen to evoke a sense of tranquillity, reduce anxiety, and promote a healing atmosphere.

Natural light plays a significant role in this design, with expansive windows overlooking Cape Town’s picturesque mountains and harbour, allowing patients to connect with the outdoors, offering a sense of serenity and hope.

Incorporating elements that enhance patient comfort, especially when they are frail or might feel hopeless, is of paramount importance. Ergonomically designed furniture, offering a variety of seating, with textured fabrics provides physical comfort, caters to different patient needs and creates a homely feel.

The layout ensures privacy when needed but also facilitates social interactions, creating a supportive community within the unit. Thoughtful artwork, such as serene landscapes and inspirational quotes were chosen to uplift spirits. The design also features tranquil spaces for relaxation. Soft lighting, acoustic materials and wallpaper were incorporated to provide solace for patients and their families.

By combining the principles of colour therapy, patient comfort, and the stunning natural views, the Life Vincent Pallotti Oncology unit aims to provide a space that promotes healing, hope, and a sense of serenity during challenging times.
